A Definitive Ranking of Every Star Trek
Enterprise - We all love Scott Bakula, but this shit is so dumb and hokey and jingoistic that I couldn’t watch more than a few episodes. I know this is someone’s favorite series but it shouldn’t be.
Discovery - I wrote a whole bunch of words about this already, but all you need to know is that the series continually does the dumbest thing it could do at every possible turn.
Picard - I felt very hopeful for this one, especially when it seemed like it was going to be Columbo in space with Jean Luc Picard as the PI. But then they went to space and the whole thing kind of fell in on itself.
Strange New Worlds - Why is this the best of the new Star Treks? I don’t know, buddy. I watched a few episodes and couldn’t tell you anything about it, but it seemed like a good time for someone who likes Star Trek.
The Original Series - I remember watching this with my dad when I was little and that’s enough reason for it to be better than the ones I’ve already listed. What I remember about it is that Kirk was often a horny dude.
Deep Space Nine - I list this here much to the chagrin of Kyle Muntz, my cowriter, who loves this series. But I tried watching it and they had those dumb guys with the big ears all over the place and I just couldn’t deal with it.
Voyager - My wife’s favorite Star Trek, which is reason enough for it to be so high up on this list. I also only made it a few episodes in before the bad acting blasted through my skull.
The Next Generation - The only Star Trek series I’ve watched from beginning to end. I love it! It’s hilarious and often just so much fun.
The Shattered Stars - I say this with my whole dumb chest: we have written the best version of Star Trek. You’re going to love it.
“A fun, punchy space opera with heart and tenderness. I recommend this to anyone who loves Star Trek and Doctor Who. I had a lot of fun with the crew on their expedition and look forward to more of their adventures!”
—Rios de la Luz, author of Itza
It was all so simple. When we began writing The Shattered Stars, we went in trying to have as much fun as possible.
This has been a guiding philosophy for a few years now and it sometimes leads me into strange new waters. And nothing could be stranger or more unexpected than for me to write a space opera in the style of Star Trek.
But after trying to convince Kyle Muntz to write his own version of Star Trek, we ended up writing it together, which meant I needed to stretch myself in new ways. I had to invent an entire universe and then worlds to fit into that universe. Had to learn how to write fight scenes and negotiations in space with pirates and reluctant governments.
Each episode of The Shattered Stars was more fun to write than the previous one, which also, of course, made each one better. Continually pushing ourselves and topping what we thought we were capable of.
I am so excited for everyone to read this series, and it all begins with Colony Collapse.

I’m giving away the ebook of Howl in this promo bundle! The sequel is coming at the end of April with the third in the series coming end of May. This is also the best way to keep up to date with The Shattered Stars.
The Shattered Stars
The Galactic Federation exists only as a memory.
But in a distant corner of the galaxy, the Burning Apollo carries out its impossible mission:
to reunite the scattered fragments of humanity,
to seek out forgotten stars,
to bravely rediscover what was lost long ago.
Episode One: Colony Collapse
The boy from the ice planet distrusts the woman from the sky. For four hundred years his people have struggled to survive, even as they fight over the destroyed vessel that remains their ancestral home. When disaster strikes, the boy must call for help from the woman’s friends beyond the clouds. But the voice that answers will change the future of this planet forever—and not necessarily for the better.
I was delightfully surprised by how that definitive ranking list played out.
